fenerbahce to moscow?

Hello. I'm gutted about Milan, but at least this way I won't have to worry about them collapsing on pitch for exhaustion. It could still happen, but nothing quite sets the pulse racing disturbingly like a night in Europe, and unless Inter smuggle Nesta & Kaladze in to their centre-back positions next week, giving them bad haircuts in the hope that no one will notice they're not from the right side of town, that's a kick the rossoneri's "DNA of Champions" is going to have to do without.

But Sevilla-Fenerbahce. What a pity one of those two had to go out, huh? Of course, there's always the argument to be made that a defensive display appalling enough to allow the final score over 210 minutes to stand at 5-5 is no great shakes, but come on. If an English side had been in a game like that we'd never be hearing the end of it in the international media.

Roma-Real in about six minutes. I see La Gazzetta says "tutta l'Italia" are behind i lupi. I just hope it makes a positive difference.

I've really, really tried, but I'm not behind i lupi -- my Totti hatred is just too strong for me to wish them success against anyone. (That, and I'm a terrible person.) It's a good thing I'm not in Italy, or I'd really screw up La Gazzetta's grand Declarations.

[I want Batista to come to Inter plz. Adding someone that giant to the midfield has to be worth something.]

[What's the use? Pavel Nedved would break his ankle anyway.]

Even if I hated Roma - which I don't - I would find it impossible not to support them against Real Madrid. I think if Juventus were playing in Roma's stead tonight I would support Juventus. And I -- need to go wash my mouth out now.

Roswitha! Spit three times and say your penance. That's dirty talk, that is.

Personally, I'm supporting Real. Because I kind of like them, and because I hate Roma just that much. How about a CL with no Italian teams at all, then? That's about right for the state of Serie A right now.

[Whether or not I put the "p" his name, I'm not sure he's breakable. He seems to be made of ... something very big and tough.]

WOW. I'm staring at that Juve comment open-mouthed now. I had no idea it was as bad as that.

I have nothing against Roma and I dislike Real Madrid, so that's my preference right now. Also, one of my oddest pieces of memorabilia is for Roma.

(I can't help but wish good things for Schalke, though, as much as Angha would probably disagree with me. I want a German team even if it's them.)

You guys, what? I LIKE BUFFON. Don't quote me on it - when push comes to shove it's highly likely they'll do something to make me root for los Merengues, but it'd have to be something extraordinary.

I don't know about it saying anything re: the state of Serie A, Angha - I didn't hear anybody say it when Milan and Juve made an all-Italian final in Europe in 2003, nor anyone decry the decline of Spanish football last year when they had tough draws, so I'm willing to write this off as just an exceptionally bad run of luck for these guys. I do think the Premiership is causing an imbalance in European competition, but then I think the Premiership is threatening everything.

@ Martha - Baptista played as a striker for Arsenal! Do you mean to tell me he's duking it out in the midfield for Real?

Abby, you can't get away with that - what piece of memorabilia is that? [It can't be more adorable/absurd than your claret-and-blue jammies. Can it?]

He does! I see on Wikipedia that he used to play out wide for them before the Arsenal loan; these days he seems to always end up in the middle of the midfield, whether he starts on the left or not.

And I see Roma are scoreless at the half. As are Real.

Is it wrong that I'm my overwhelming feeling is one of gladness that that the words 'SEVEN ONE' do not seem like they will be appropriate to this particular match discussion. So far.

Abby! Not you too! There will be no saying nice things about Schalke around me! Not even with them being the only Bundesliga representative still in the CL. Or with their having an adorable baby goalkeeper. (Even if said adorable baby goalkeeper is noticeably less adorable this season, and totally eclipsed by his smoking hot neighbor to the north.)

I'm rather glad Schalke & Porto are playing each other, as I am that Fener & Sevilla matched up. At least this way one of each pair gets to breathe the rarefied air of the last eights. Wincing at the fate of Olympiakos as we speak.

Martha: Much is explained about JB's strange lack of success at Arsenal. Of course, it's all relative - he actually had a couple of games where he scored for fun and then stopped, and the Arsenal fans were furious. If he'd been at Milan he'd have got a five-year contract and "the full confidence" of Berlu & Fester. *coughs and does not look at Gila*

YES!

I'm going to go eat a chocolate biscuit now and try and catch my breath. Stoppages were excruciating.

Hey now, Angha, no being mean to the adorable baby goalkeeper even if he is having a tough season. And I've never had any particular feeling towards Schalke one way or another (except maybe pity for always screwing up so badly), so I'm willing to support them as the one Bundesliga representative. Even if it's them. I would rather have it be Werder, but whose fault is that really...

As for the Roma memorabilia, it is a stocking for La Bafana featuring bootlegged Roma emblems such as a truly bizarre cartoon she-wolf carrying children and a guy who looks like a Native American for some reason. I'll see if I can dig up a picture.

Hey, Abby, no worries. Hertha for Europe 2012?

[I remember this! My apologies. It definitely wins out over the Barca sleepwear. I'm envious.]

Heeee. Maybe if Dieter Hoeness actually steps down in 2010 like he said he would, there's a chance...

(I definitely gain my taste in weird memorabilia from my mother. She bought it for me. I picked out the pajamas on my own. We're odd.)

*looks around for someone to blame*

*can't find anyone*

after two spectacular wins in two days from my two teams, something is bound to go horribly wrong for me almost immediately. but I'm kind of happy about things right now.

sorry about milan though.

And Fiorentina has won too! Squee!

Re: Milan. Oh, well, what do you do.
